Director Phil Alden Robinson read the novel and took it to producers Lawrence Gordon and Charles Gordon in 1981. The film is based on the Shoeless Joe novel written by W.P. Field of Dreams was nominated for three Academy Awards. The film stars Costner, Liotta, James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan and Burt Lancaster. The baseball diamond attracts the spirits of iconic baseball figures, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, played by the late Ray Liotta. After a mysterious voice tells him, "If you build it, he will come," Ray builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield. The original 1989 film follows Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (played by Costner). The Gordon company produced the 1989 film. He will serve as executive producer for Freevee's upcoming Primo. Schur is the creator of The Good Place, co-creator of Parks and Recreation, Rutherford Falls and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and has worked on series including The Office, Master of None and Hacks. He was also set to executive produce under Fremulon, with Lawrence Gordon of The Gordon Company, David Miner of 3 Arts and Morgan Sackett. Michael Shur was set to write the Field of Dreams adaptation. Universal Television is still hoping to find a home for the project, and shopping it to other networks and streamers. The series was set to film entirely in Iowa, the setting of the original film. Interest in the film, which starred Kevin Costner, picked up last year after baseball's Field of Dreams games between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox aired to high viewership. The Field of Dreams reimagining was originally ordered at Peacock in August 2021. Peacock is not moving forward with a Field of Dreams series adaptation, Variety reports.
